Supporting Your Lymphatic System

Once a relatively overlooked system in the body, the lymphatic system has become more well known as awareness grows around the vital role it plays in immunity and overall health. More recently, there has been a trend online of "lymph draining" videos, telling us that any excess weight we are carrying may not be fat, but actually stagnant lymph fluid. How true is this?

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is made up of various organs, tissues and vessels in the body, including bone marrow, the thymus, lymph nodes and the spleen. (1) Its job is to move lymph, a water-like fluid, through the body and return it to the bloodstream, helping to remove waste products such as old or damaged cells, cellular debris and other unwanted substances.

What can affect healthy lymphatic flow?

Some aspects of our modern lifestyle, including a more processed diet, stress, tight clothing and long periods of sitting, may affect healthy lymphatic flow. (2) Long periods of inactivity in particular can reduce the muscle movement that helps lymph fluid travel through the lymphatic vessels.

When lymphatic drainage is impaired, fluid can build up in the tissues, which may cause swelling or puffiness, particularly in the hands, arms, feet or ankles. Persistent or unexplained swelling should always be checked by a healthcare professional, as there can be many possible causes.

What about swollen lymph nodes?

Swollen lymph nodes are slightly different and are most commonly a sign that the immune system is responding to an infection. However, if a swollen lymph node persists or is unexplained, it is worth having it checked by a healthcare professional, as this can occasionally be a symptom of conditions such as lymphoma. (3) This could mean that some of what we think of as excess weight or puffiness may actually be fluid build-up rather than body fat.

How can you support healthy lymphatic flow?

So, if you've had a look at the symptoms above and feel you may relate to a few of them, what can you do to support healthy lymphatic flow? Firstly, get moving! Activities such as walking and rebounding can help encourage the movement of lymph around the body. (4)

Cleavers and lymphatic support

You could also consider Cleavers, also known as Sticky Willies, a plant many of us are familiar with for its tendency to stick to our clothes. Cleavers has a long history of traditional use in supporting the lymphatic system and normal fluid balance. (5)

It is available in both tincture and capsule form, making it easy to add into your daily routine. You can try Viridian Cleavers 400mg Capsules or Viridian Organic Cleavers Tincture.

A.Vogel Calendula Complex

A.Vogel Calendula Complex is another traditional herbal option, containing calendula alongside other herbs traditionally used to support the skin and the body's natural cleansing processes.
