New Research: Lion's Mane Mushrooms and Brain Health?
If you've been researching brain health and memory support, you've likely stumbled across many mentions of natural supplements that are promised to enhance your brain. One of these that pops up time and time again is Lion's Mane mushroom (Hericium erinaceus). Lion's mane has emerged as a promising contender for its actions on boosting cognitive function and mood. While previous studies laid a foundation of support for its efficacy, a recent breakthrough study by Docherty et al. in 2023, digs deeper into the effects of Lion's Mane supplementation on cognitive function, stress and mood.
The Study Design:
Intriguingly, Docherty's study addresses a crucial gap left by previous research which typically focused on the effects of long-term supplementation effects. This new study however, explores both short-term and long-term outcomes, offering a more subjective assessment of the impact of Lion's Mane's supplementation. The randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-groups study enlisted 41 healthy adults aged 18-45, who were given a daily dose of 1.8g of Lion's Mane. The study measured acute outcomes just 60 minutes post-dose and chronic outcomes over 28 days.
Cognitive Function Tests:
To try to understand the impact of Lion's Mane supplementation, the study used various cognitive function tests, including the Stroop task and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The results began to fill in the missing parts of the puzzle. The group taking Lion's Mane completed the Stroop task much faster than the group taking a placebo. Furthermore, a notable trend toward reduced feelings of stress was observed in the group using Lion's Mane rather than a placebo.
Implications and Conclusions:
The implications of these findings are important in holding a more comprehensive view of the actions of Lion's Mane. The findings suggest that Lion's Mane can improve cognitive performance while also reducing feelings of stress in healthy adults.
Understanding natural supplements is an ongoing process. Research is important to understand the various modes of action these supplements have, and undoubtedly more research is needed. Lion's Mane, however, with its unique qualities, has undoubtedly earned its place in the spotlight and will continue to be called up for its positive effects on both cognitive health and stress support.
