Should you take 5HTP supplements?

5HTP, or L-5 hydroxytryptophan to call it by its full title, is a compound that’s made by the body. Our bodies use 5HTP to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter which works with mood and appetite regulation, as well as supporting gut function.
Our bodies make 5HTP from the amino acid, tryptophan, which is found in certain foods, such as turkey, cheese, bananas, salmon, seeds and eggs. 5HTP itself however, isn't found in any foods which is why many people are researching the potential benefits of 5HTP supplements.

Uses of 5HTP supplements
Research is patchy on 5HTP supplementation and the recent spike in popularity is largely propelled by anecdotal evidence. The main aim of 5-HTP supplements is to promote the production of serotonin - one of our 'happy chemicals'.
For this reason, 5HTP supplements are often used to manage conditions such as:
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Sleeping problems
• Migraines
• Weight maintenance
• Fibromyalgia
Cautions with 5HTP supplements
If you’re considering taking 5HTP capsules, it is advisable to see your GP first, particularly if you are being treated for a health condition or are planning to take high potency doses. 5-HTP supplements should be avoided if you are taking antidepressants or sleeping tablets. If your current prescription medication isn't working well for you, we suggest looking into this with a trained professional who can advise further. 5HTP capsules should be avoided if you have high blood pressure, liver disease or diabetes and should not be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding
How much 5HTP is safe to take?
There’s actually no official recommended daily amount for 5-HTP supplementation. Studies on the impact 5-HTP has on the human body have generally involved doses between 50mg-300mg daily. It is advisable to start at a lower dose of 5HTP capsules and gradually work up to a manageable dose.
5HTP supplementation isn't suited to everyone. Preliminary studies support its use in some capacities, and anecdotal evidence is growing. However, if you are taking anti-depressant medication or have any of the conditions listed above, it should be avoided.
