Should I take Vitamin D?
This is one of the most common questions we get asked here at Grampian Health Store. Given that we're based in Northern Scotland, our answer is pretty much always a resounding yes! Living in the Northern Hemisphere puts us at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency due to our somewhat limited access to sunlight which is needed for vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin in the truest sense of the word - in actuality, it is a hormone which is essential for the absorption of calcium from the gut into the bloodstream. The skin produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and around 10% of our body's stores is absorbed from food eaten.
Vitamin D Research
Modern research links low vitamin D levels to symptoms such as lowered immunity (frequent colds, flu's); chronic pain; fragile bones; muscle weakness; low mood/depression; cognitive impairment; hair loss and poor wound healing. Further research needs to be carried out but questions have also been raised whether there is a correlation between low Vitamin D status and Multiple Sclerosis. In-store, we're commonly asked about Vitamin D and its role in bone health. Vitamin D does indeed have an important role to play in keeping bones strong and encouraging bone density. Without Vitamin D, your body cannot effectively absorb calcium or phosphorous - both of which play a vital role in bone mineralisation and bone density. Ask in-store for more individualised advice if you are concerned about the health of your bones or you would like more information. Another of the more common conversations we have with regards Vitamin D is whether or not it can help lift mood, particularly during winter months. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder said to be caused by seasonal drops in sunlight exposure. A 2018 meta-analysis found a correlation between low vitamin D levels and depression. It's important to note that this does not necessarily mean that low vitamin D status causes depression but it's certainly a point to consider. It's also worth noting here that it can take vitamin D levels can take 3-4 months of regular supplementation before plateauing so patience is necessary.
